Mumbles Marvellous Weekend 2014

C 19th May 2014

Oystermouth Castle is a great place to visit any weekend, but over the Bank Holiday weekend that mediaeval joint will be jumping!  We’ve picked out the highlights below – including art, poetry, music and the chance to meet a real-life pop art icon.

The Castle grounds will be making the most of ‘Mumbles Marvellous Weekend’ from Friday 23rd to Bank Holiday Monday 26th May with a real treat for both music and arts lovers.  A real coup is Sir Peter Blake, pop artist, but also famous for his distinctive album sleeves, including the Beatles’ Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.  Sir Peter will be talking about his series of paintings inspired by Dylan Thomas’ Under Milk Wood.

The ongoing Dylan Thomas 2014 celebrations will be flavouring the weekend with Dylan Thomas aficionado Jeff Towns and the ‘Do Not Go Gentle Festival’ joining Sir Peter Blake on Saturday’s menu.

The sound of music will also be weaving its way around the Castle with an eclectic mix of Jazz and Blues on Friday and Saturday, with a change of pace to classical music – in the shape of the ‘Mumbles Proms – on Sunday – with a promise of a good old Welsh sing-song as a finale!

Then on Monday, the Castle goes back to its roots with a Mediaeval Fayre and Food Festival, with great food and great fun for the kids.  Finally, there’s a treat for Shakespeare fans (!) as Kevin Johns offers new insight into the Bard’s body of work in ‘Taffy Shakespeare’.

Mumbles’ selection of cafes and restaurants will keep you fuelled up and if you fancy a stroll in between events, either browse around the village’s boutiques and galleries or go for a refreshing walk along the Prom.

All in all, we’re sure you’ll agree this sounds like a great way to spend a Bank Holiday weekend, all wrapped up in one of the prettiest places on the Welsh coastline.  Here’s to a Mumbles Marvellous Weekend!
