Visit this award winning museum nestled in the Afan Valley and find yourself being taken on an historical journey back in time. Entering the museum you will be met by passages designed to look like an old mining tunnel and models depicting miners and children as young as six working the coal face . The Museum depicts a number of scenes not only of the well known collier but also the hauliers, managers, rescue men and the home life that was integral part of history.
Each tour guide has their own tales to tell and no two trips to the museum are the same. Learn about the death of colleagues, disasters and explosions underground. The hardship of jobs and life, but also the camaraderie of the men and their hopes and commitment as miners of Black Gold. Visualise the family home the social life and the community inclusion. Brass bands , First aid competitions are just some of the things they got up to.
Outdoor exhibits situate close to the museum include a Blacksmith Shop, Lamp Room , Pithead Wheel, Haulage Engine , Journey of Drams and the newly refurbished Miniature Steam Engine, Glyndwr.
