The Victorian resort of Mumbles
The Victorian resort of Mumbles*

Mumbles is situated at the end of the 5 mile sweep of Swansea Bay. This Victorian seaside resort is full of character and fully deserves its name as the 'Gateway to Gower'.

Home to some of the finest restaurants in the area, it is the place to enjoy local produce such as freshly caught fish and other seafood delicacies. And for dessert, Mumbles hosts two of the most talked about ice cream parlours in the region, Joe's and Verdi's. For ideas on where to eat out, use our Restaurant Finder.

Amongst the small shops in Mumbles you can find local pottery, lovespoons and surf gear or alternatively browse around many of the small art galleries and craft shops that the village has to offer.

Do not miss a visit to Oystermouth Castle, which plays host to outdoor theatre performances in the summer - coming up soon: 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' (13th - 14th Aug).

Nearby beaches include Bracelet Bay and Limeslade Bay - catch a glimpse of the Mumbles Lighthouse on the way. Built in 1794, it was designed to alert passing ships of the dangerous Mixon Sands and Cherry Stone Rock - two massive undersea sand banks.

Mumbles Pier is also well worth a visit for its café and ice rink. Or take a trip on the Mumbles land train which runs from Blackpill to Verdi's along the seafront. A journey once made by the famous 'Mumbles Railway', which brought fame and fortune to Mumbles when it was inaugurated in 1807 as the first horse-drawn passenger railway in the world!

With a wide range of places to see and things to do, Mumbles is a great day out for the whole family! No wonder Swansea-born actress Catherine Zeta Jones and husband Michael Douglas recently built a house on the outskirts of this lovely Victorian resort!
