A Doctor Who Day has been arranged for the city’s Dylan Thomas Centre on Saturday November 2 as part of the 2013 Dylan Thomas Festival, complete with Daleks!

Festival organisers are lining up Dr Who experts for the day of fun who’ll be on hand to look back at the programme’s history and look forward to its future.

Swansea Council is among the organisers.

There’ll also be a children’s art workshop, a writers’ panel and a visit from the Daleks – a fictional extraterrestrial race of mutants who first appeared in Dr Who back in 1963.

News of the event comes in the wake of the new Dr Who series starring Matt Smith starting on BBC One.

Jo Furber, Swansea Council’s Literature Officer, said: “In 1963, a teatime programme for families created by a team of youthful and untested writers, directors and designers at BBC Lime Grove studios debuted on Britain’s TV screens.

“Fifty years later, Doctor Who is not only still on TV, but it’s also become a beloved cultural icon, demonstrating a particular kind of very British science fiction.

“Then in 2004, Doctor Who took on a new, proudly Welsh dimension when it began to be produced in Cardiff with Swansea-born writer Russell T Davies as screenwriter. Much content has been also been filmed in Swansea and the November event will strengthen our city’s proud links with the programme.”

This year’s Dylan Thomas Festival runs from October 27 to November 9.
