The word ‘App’ is an abbreviation for application. It’s a piece of software that can run on the Internet, a computer, a phone or another electronic device. The Swansea city centre app can be downloaded for free from Apple’s App Store or Google’s Play Store.

The City Centre app is part of an overall Big Local App for Swansea. Anyone who downloads the new app has the chance to win an iPad.

The City Centre app is being officially launched in an event on Friday (April 12) on Oxford Street from 10am to 2pm that will feature a Wave outdoor broadcast, face-painting, balloon-making and a portable bowling alley, thanks to Tenpin Bowling in Parc Tawe.

Cllr Nick Bradley, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration, said: “From Google Earth to Twitter, the world of apps is transforming the way we access information, stay in touch with friends and wile away the hours in the house or on the move.

“Figure show billions of people downloaded apps last year for use on their smart phones and tablets, and this is why it’s important Swansea city centre keeps up with the times. The new City Centre app will give users access to plenty of useful information that will get updated throughout the year, and you can even use it to book cinema tickets.

“It meets the aspirations of shoppers and other visitors at a time when we’re doing all we can to support our City Centre traders.”

Russell Greenslade, Chief Executive of Swansea BID, said: “This will be a very useful tool in our City Centre armoury to support our BID members and attract even more shoppers in future. The app shows we’re determined to keep pace with the times and meet the needs of 21st Century visitors. We’d encourage City Centre visitors to download the app and City Centre businesses to take advantage of their inclusion in it.”

Gareth Manger, from The Big Local App Company, said: “A high percentage of the population have a smart phone and use apps, and this app is a great way for people to get up-to-date information at the touch of a button and, more importantly, it’s free to download. The Big Local App is a modern way for local businesses to market their services to a local audience and engage with their customers.”

Swansea City Centre’s website has also been revamped and you can follow the city centre on Facebook and Twitter. The website, which averages about 7,000 visits a month, includes what’s on information and details on the City Centre loyalty card scheme.
