The tunnel is a well-known local landmark over which the famous Mumbles Railway once ran and now it’ll be an access point to the marina under the Council’s Waterfront Connections scheme.

New street lighting is also being introduced on the marina side of the tunnel and the area is being opened up with a wide, clear footpath for pedestrians.

On the southern side of the tunnel there are also improvements for residents with an old cluttered seating area being removed with better visibility through the tunnel to the maritime quarter, making it safer and more attractive for residents and visitors to the waterfront and marina.

The footway between the LC and the Civic Centre has already been widened and a new link from Dunvant Place to the foreshore is complete.

Cllr Nick Bradley, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration, said: “The Paxton tunnel has been spruced up along with the area on both sides of it to create an attractive link between Oystermouth Road and the waterfront area.

“The wider Waterfront Connections scheme, which includes a new footpath and cycleway between the Marriot Hotel and Civic Centre to the promenade, will help visitors and residents find their way between the waterfront and the city centre more easily.

“This is good news for shops and other businesses in both areas.”

Waterfront Connections is one of a number of projects being funded by the Welsh Government, the Wales European Funding Office and Swansea Council to improve the Swansea city centre experience for residents, businesses and visitors to the city.

Other aspects of the scheme will include widening the path west of the Civic Centre to the foreshore and putting new paving and railings in place towards the western end of the marina.
