Walks, Waterfalls and Hidden Wonders in the Rural Valleys

We’ll hand you over to the fantastic Swansea Bay Without a Car to reveal all >>

Not a lot of people know just how incredibly interesting and beautiful the hinterland of Swansea Bay is. Even fewer know how easy and stress free it is to get there by bus from Swansea. So we’re going to let you know!

Let’s start with the Swansea Valley where located in the bucolic tributary valley Cwm Clydach is a major RSPB bird reserve. The 14 bus takes you direct to the reserve entrance at Craig Cefn Parc. Then there is the interesting transport heritage typified by the Swansea Canal. Walking along the towpath (Clydach to Pontardawe or Pontardawe to Godre’r Graig) is a serene escape from the bustle of everyday life and the valley looks so attractive from this angle. The X50 or X51 bus takes you to Clydach Mond or Pontardawe Jubilee; from both it is just a short walk to reach the canal towpath.

Then there is the Vale of Neath, immortalised by famous artist Turner amongst others and the site of the Britain’s greatest concentration of spectacular waterfalls. The X55 bus takes you right into Waterfall Country at Pontneddfechan, from where you can choose between easy and more challenging walks to up to eight major falls. The X55 stops near to the beautiful gem of Melincourt Waterfall en route.

Finally, the two amazing Country Parks at Afan Forest and Margam; Afan Forest Park, famed for its mountain biking, is less well known is its network of easy footpaths along former railway lines, all easily accessible by bus. The X3 from Swansea connects to the 83 at Port Talbot and this serves most access points for walks in the valley. Margam Country Park has such a lot; great history and heritage, a chance to roam through fabulous countryside and hopeful sighting of its deer herd. The X1 from Swansea goes direct to the main entrance of the park and you won’t need to pay entrance fees if you go by bus.

Buses are frequent (at least hourly) on Mondays to Saturdays. On Sundays and Public Holidays, infrequent services operate on only the X1 and X50 routes.

All day tickets at affordable prices available to all areas.
