Swansea International Jazz Festival 2024
15 - 17 June

Supported by University of Wales Trinity Saint David’s Swansea College of Art.
Glynn Vivian Art Gallery and GS Artists are delighted to present a multifaceted project looking at how art participates in the centre of a healthy functioning society, starting with art schools.
Swansea College of Art at University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) has long been a core part of the art scene in Swansea and its relationship with the galleries has been one of reciprocity and generosity, from exhibiting both students’ and lecturers’ work, providing employment, through to sharing resources and space. The first director of Swansea College of Art, William Grant Murray (1877-1950) was also the first curator of Glynn Vivian Art Gallery.

These joint exhibitions at Glynn Vivian and at GS Artists aim to celebrate the past, the present and the future contexts of art education.

At GS Artists, there will be an exhibition celebrating Swansea College of Art’s archive. It will include photographs from Swansea photographer Colin Riddle, plus archival images and material from the college’s archive as well as from lecturers and past students. There will also be video and audio recordings of participants’ recollections of the art college, exploring their unique experiences.

At Glynn Vivian, there will be a display of artworks from the gallery’s permanent collection from both Swansea College of Art alumni and lecturers, including works from Irene Bache, Glenys Cour, James Henry Govier, Alfred Janes, Ceri Richards, Jane Phillips, Will Roberts and many more.

There will also be a chance for you to add any memories or thoughts to the exhibition as we continue to grow this archive that will live in both Glynn Vivian Art Gallery and Swansea College of Art’s archives.
