Renowned Canadian poet, novelist and short story writer Dr Darryl Whetter will give a public talk at Dylan Thomas’s childhood home at 5 Cwmdonkin Drive as guest of the Creative writing programme at Swansea University and the Dylan Thomas Birthplace (Tuesday 5th September 6.30pm for a 7.00pm start).

It will be a special occasion for Dr Whetter who studied for his PhD under the celebrated Canadian poet and Dylan Thomas expert Don McKay who himself gained his doctorate at the university’s Singleton campus.

Darryl’s prolific output includes the novel A Sharp Tooth in the Fur which was named on the Toronto Globe and Mail Top 100 Book List while his first book of poems Origins concerned evolution, energy and extinction.

He has lectured in places as far afield as France, Germany, Iceland, USA, Canada and India and is currently head of the Creative Writing programme at La Salle College in Singapore. This will be his first visit to Wales and he says “I’m really looking forward to visiting Swansea where Dylan Thomas has been the inspiration for so many writers, artists and poets.”

Swansea’s Director of Creative Writing Professor David Britton says “It will be a pleasure and an honour to hear Darryl’s unique work in the fitting surroundings of the birthplace of Dylan Thomas. As the home of the International Dylan Thomas Prize, Swansea University treasures its relationship with both Thomas himself and with the legacy he has left through writers he has inspired internationally like Don McKay and Darryl Whetter.”

Tickets are £5.00 (including refreshments) are available from 07506 064973 or geoff@dylanthomasbirthplace.com on a first come, first served basis.
