SUMMER in Swansea 2019 promises to be a sensational one after singer Jess Glynne became the first major star to announce she’s staging a gig at Singleton Park in July.
Jess, who’s currently on a world tour to promote her chart-topping second album, will be playing to thousands of fans at the park on July 28.
When Jess looks at the statistics that have marked her sky-rocketing career so far, there is a look of mild disbelief on her face, as if this might have happened to someone else. I Cry When I Laugh is one of the defining British pop records of its era holding its place in the charts for 138 weeks and counting. It debuted at number 1, spawning 12million worldwide singles sales, 39 weeks on the UK top 10, 2.5billion Spotify streams, a sold out UK arena tour, Brit, MTV: EMA, Ivor Novello, MOBO, Q and Glamour award nominations.
Since then, she has released her chart-topping second studio album, Always In Between which went straight into the number one spot. Her run of hit singles continued with I’ll Be There, a seventh top spot that secured Glynne the record for most number one singles by a British female solo artist, then All I Am and Thursday. Jess will also be the main support to the Spice Girls on their 2019 comeback tour.
Robert Francis-Davies, Cabinet Member for Innovation, Regeneration and Tourism, said that Jess’ one-off gig proves that world-class bands and fans alike are taking notice of Swansea as a destination for top quality music.
He said: “There’s no doubt about it. Showcasing Swansea on BBC’s Biggest Weekend last summer was a huge success. It’s proved not just to fans but to the management of some of the world’s biggest bands that we know how to put on a show.
“Jess Glynne will be following in the footsteps of the likes of Ed Sheeran, Florence and the Machine and Taylor Swift who were watched by 60,000 fans across the two days at the park and millions more on TV.
“The fact that Swansea’s show last summer was broadcast all over the world, that the fans were the most enthusiastic and that the event itself was hailed the best of the four shows staged by the BBC.
“We are thrilled to be seeing Jess Glynne next summer and we’re sure thousands of her fans will be making the trip to Swansea to enjoy the event.”
He added: “Singleton Park’s reputation as a top venue for outdoor concerts is growing every year and we’re sure there will be more great news to come. Everyone in the music industry is talking about us and that’s brilliant because they know the support we provide on the ground to facilitate shows of this kind is second to none.”
Tickets go on sale from 10am Friday 14 December 2018, and are available from Ticketmaster and Gigantic.
Swansea Council and its partners will provide support outside the park with traffic management, car parking, sign-posting and other facilities. Residents will be kept informed as arrangements are worked out.
