Photographic Collection of Elizabeth Maria ‘Lizzie’ East (1882-1952)

This fascinating collection was donated to Swansea Museum by her grand-daughter Alberta Stevens.

Lizzie was a well-known photographer in the Morriston area and flourished from 1900 to the mid 1930’s. Before this collection was donated to the museum it was thought that her surviving photographs were rare.

Lizzie had a studio at her home on the corner of Caemawr Road and Clyndu Street, Morriston, known as Part Lan Studio. The studio was her father’s before her, his profession being listed on her marriage certificate (1903) as ‘Master Photographer.’

The majority of professional photographers at the beginning of the 1900’s were male, women photographers if known were rare, Elizabeth Maria East was one of them.

Open Tuesday – Sunday, and bank holidays, 10am – 5pm. Free.
