Did you know that ‘Bôn-y-maen’ is welsh for ‘base of the stone’?

Standing 1.3m high with a base of 1.2m by 0.5m, the Standing Stone at Mansel Road, Bonymaen is one that many of us may have passed by without really realising what it is.

Leaning slightly to the south, and made of sandstone, the megalithic monument is around 4000 years old and originates from the Bronze Age – therefore is of great national importance and archaeological interest.

There is even a strong chance that there could be prehistoric burials within the local environment, and ritual ceremonies may have taken place at this spot too.

Standing stones are often part of a larger cluster of monuments.
