Merry Christmas from Oystermouth Castle!

Are your little ones fans of the magical world of Frozen?

Why not recycle those cardboard tubes and boxes into your very own wintery castle!

What you’ll need

  • A selection of cardboard tubes / rolls / boxes (you can use however many you like!)
  • Some thin cardboard for making roofs (we used an old cereal box)
  • Paintbrush and paint (we chose a shimmery blue for the main parts and silver for the rooves)
  • Scissors
  • A pen / pencil
  • Glue or masking tape
  • Whatever you like to decorate your castle (we used glitter glue and stickers)

Step 1

Collect together your cardboard tubes / rolls / boxes and have a think about how you might like to arrange them.

Step 2

Trim any opening flaps from boxes and decide if you’d like to cut out squares at the top of some of your towers, to make crenels.

We also cut a doorway for our gatehouse.

Step 3

Decide how many of your towers / turrets you’d like to have rooves.

To make your rooves, you’ll need to draw around something circular on your thin cardboard. For larger kitchen roll tubes we drew around something with a diameter of approximately 16cm and for smaller tubes we drew around something approximately 12cm in diameter.

Once you’ve cut out your circles, cut roughly a 90 degree angle / quarter section out of your circle.

Twist your circle into a cone shape and secure it together with glue or masking tape.

Glue your rooves onto your towers / turrets.

Step 4

Paint all the parts of your castle!

We chose a shimmery blue for the main parts and silver for the rooves.

You may need to do a couple of layers of paint depending on the packaging you used.

Step 5

Assemble your castle, carefully attaching all the parts together with glue.

(If you prefer, you can attach your castle parts together first, with glue or masking tape, and paint afterwards).

Step 6

Decorate your winter castle with whatever you can find!

We used glitter glue to add some finishing touches like windows and icicles, and then added some winter themed stickers.

You could also add a snow effect to your rooves using white paint.
