The 25-metre long panel is replacing part of the promenade wall outside the 360 Beach and Watersports Centre opposite St Helen’s.

A section of wall along Swansea Bay has now been removed and safety fencing is up. The next step will see a concrete plinth put in place before the specialised glass is installed by the start of June.

The glass panel is one of a range of improvements being introduced at the centre, which opened last year. The centre is run by Bay Sport Ltd – a partnership between Bay Leisure Ltd and Swansea University.

Other improvements include the installation of an all-weather, retractable patiola and widening the car park entrance.

The improvements are being funded after Swansea Council and Bay Sport Ltd successfully applied to Visit Wales’ Tourism Investment Support Scheme.

Cllr Nick Bradley, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration, said: “We’re blessed in Swansea to live so close to a stunning bay and promenade. The views from the seafront are world class, but feedback from some customers suggested the new 360 Beach and Watersports Centre would be even better if they could enjoy unobstructed views of the sea when sat inside or outside.

“This new glass panel will give customers there and the many thousands of people who visit the promenade every year fantastic views of the bay. It will also further add to a terrific new centre that’s helping Swansea reinforce its status as a premier city of sport and outdoor activities.”

Kate Hannington, 360 Centre Manager, said “Since 360 opened back in October 2012, the centre has proven a real hit with the local community and visitors to Swansea.  Our blend of outdoor sports and activity, coupled with quality food, drink and great service has captured people’s imagination and kept them coming back right through the winter months.  The new developments will provide a better experience for all visitors, whether relaxing in the cafe bar or playing volleyball out on the beach – whatever the weather.”

The 360 Beach and Watersports Centre offers beach and water-based activities as well as a café, changing facilities, public toilets and a Changing Places toilet for use by people with multiple or profound disabilities. The cafe has also been given a new look for the summer.

The overall centre project was funded by the Welsh Government through the European Regional Development Fund, Visit Wales and the Regeneration Area programme.
