The 1980’s roller skating rink will form part of a new retro attraction called Summer Roller that will be set up at the city’s Museum Park in Swansea City Centre from Wednesday August 14 to Tuesday August 27.

The 30-metre x 20-metre Admiral Roller Rink will also include a booth where people can hire roller-skates.

Summer Roller is part of the Swansea Bay Festival being organised by Swansea Council.

Disco tracks pumping out in the background will add to the nostalgic feel of the event when participants take to the rink.

A beach will also be set up, complete with buckets, spades, deck chairs and picnic tables.

Cllr Nick Bradley, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration, said: “This is a fantastic idea that will replicate the fun and feel of Waterfront Winterland at the same location in the summer months. The Summer Roller will be great fun for children and for anyone looking to roll back the years and recapture their youth.

“But events like these are also important for local traders because they attract thousands of people into the city centre and Maritime Quarter.

“This is just one of many forthcoming events over the summer months forming part of theSwansea Bay Festival. The variety of what’s being planned means there’ll be something to cater for all ages and interests.”

The rink is being sponsored by insurance giant Admiral.

Sue Longthorn, Admiral Managing Director, said: “We are delighted to sponsor the Admiral Summer Roller Rink this year. Supporting events in our communities is very important to us and the opportunity to be involved in both a summer and winter event with the Admiral Ice Rink is exciting.

“I am sure that loads of our staff will be getting their skates on to join in with the summer fun.”

A funfair will also be set up at Summer Roller as well as children’s entertainment, food and drink.

The Summer Roller event will be open from 10am to 9pm every day while the event is on.

Other events being planned for the Swansea Bay Festival include Live@Singleton Park on June 30 and a medieval-style battle re-enactment at Oystermouth Castle on Saturday August 10 and Sunday August 11.
