Swansea will welcome some of the World’s top para-athletes and ultimate fitness fans when the Volvo 2022 World Triathlon Para Series Swansea and IRONMAN 70.3 Swansea take place this August.

To get you in the mood for a weekend of top sporting achievement, let’s find out a bit more about both events…

Ironman finisher

  • The IRONMAN 70.3 Swansea consists of a 1.2-mile swim, a 56-mile bike ride, and a 13.1-mile seaside run (or half marathon). That’s 70.3 miles in total…

  • It will be the first ever IRONMAN 70.3 event to take place in Wales.

  • With spots for over 2,000 athletes to race, IRONMAN 70.3 Swansea sold out in only four days.

  • IRONMAN 70.3 Swansea has 40 professional male and female athletes registered to race, 63% will be representing Wales and impressive 700 athletes are from the Swansea area itself!

  • Keep an eye out for two-time Olympic triathlon gold medallist Alistair Brownlee (GBR) and IRONMAN World Championship runner-up Kat Matthews (GBR) who are both taking part!

  • There are 6 categories in paratriathlon (PTVI, PTWC, PTS2, PTS3, PTS4, PTS5).

  • There is a classification event as part of the Volvo 2022 World Triathlon Para Series Swansea – this is the process that evaluates an athlete’s impairments and ability, they are then given a category which enables them to compete in with similar ability athletes.

  • Paratri has only recently featured at the Paralympic Games, it was a part of Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 and the great news is that is has been selected for Paris 2024.

  • There are 30 countries represented in this year’s Volvo 2022 World Triathlon Para Series Swansea and over 120 of the world’s best paratriathletes will be there!

  • Look out for Olympic cyclist George Peasgood and swimmer Claire Cashmore at the World Triathlon Para Series.
