The Swansea International Jazz Festival is back, and it promises to be bigger and better than ever.

The festival will take place from Thursday 15th to Monday 19th June, and will feature a wide range of jazz artists from around the world.

The festival will kick off with a performance by Hoop, a world-class seven-piece band reminiscent of the funk and rock fusion jazz era. They will be followed by a number of other top acts, including Laurence Cottle All Star Big Band, Daniel John Martin’s Gypsy Jazz Quartet, The Coalminers, and Iain MacKenzie.

In addition to the main concerts, the festival will also feature a number of other events, including a workshop and a jazz cruise. There will also be around 30 free gigs in local café bars, clubs, and pubs.

The Swansea International Jazz Festival is a great opportunity to experience the best of jazz music, with a diverse range of musical styles and genres.

Here is a more detailed look at some of the highlights of the festival:

Hoop

Thursday 15th June, 8:30pm. Swansea Jazz Club at The Garage, Uplands.

Hoop is a world-class seven-piece band that blends funk, rock, and jazz. They have been described as “one of the most exciting live bands in the UK”.

Laurence Cottle All Star Big Band

Friday 16th June, 8pm. Dylan Thomas Theatre, Maritime Quarter.

Laurence Cottle is one of the UK’s leading jazz musicians and musical arrangers. His All-Star Big Band features some of the finest jazz and session musicians in the country. The band explores the evolution of the Big Band over the years, playing some of the great tunes from the early days of big band through to Buddy Rich, Bob Brookmeyer, Jaco Pastorius, and including some of Laurance’s own amazing compositions.

Daniel John Martin’s Gypsy Jazz Quartet

Saturday 17th June, 2:30pm. Dylan Thomas Theatre, Maritime Quarter.

Paris-based Daniel John Martin is one of Europe’s leading gypsy jazz guitarists. His quartet features some of the finest gypsy jazz musicians in the country.

The Coalminers

Saturday 17th June, 8pm. Dylan Thomas Theatre, Maritime Quarter.

The Coalminers are a seven-piece band that combines traditional jazz with elements of folk and blues. They have been praised for their “high energy” and “infectious enthusiasm”. Playing songs ranging from Professor Longhair to Allen Toussaint, Mardi Gras parade anthems to Fats Domino rock ‘n’ roll classics and the swampy funk of The Meters and Dr John.

Iain MacKenzie

Sunday 18th June, 2:30pm. Dylan Thomas Theatre, Maritime Quarter.

Iain MacKenzie is a Scottish jazz singer and songwriter. He has been praised for his “powerful voice” and “intelligent lyrics”, his voice as rich as Sinatra’s. Iain is resident singer at both London’s Savoy Hotel and Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Orchestra.

HHH and Mo Pleasure

Sunday 18th June, 2.30pm. Dylan Thomas Theatre, Maritime Quarter.

Together, the Triple H Horns and Mo Pleasure create a powerful and energetic sound that is sure to get the audience dancing. Mo is currently musical director for Bette Midler, having previously performed the role for Earth, Wind & Fire. He’s one of the USA’s top session musicians. Expect a thrilling night of horn-heavy music with the sounds of Chaka Khan, Earth Wind & Fire, and Average White Band, to name a few.

 

In addition to the main concerts, the festival will also feature a number of other events, including:

Swansea Music’s Jazz Workshop

An afternoon workshop for young musicians (Grade 5), courtesy of Swansea Music and National Music Service of Wales. The workshop will be led by Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama’s Big Band and will cover a range of topics, including improvisation and ensemble playing.

Copper Jack Jazz Cruise

A 90-minute cruise on the River Tawe in Swansea, with live jazz music from some of the best local musicians.

BuzzAlong Bonanza

Backed by a fantastic swashbuckling big band, Swansea Y3 pupils will have the chance to celebrate their achievements, make music, and feel good. A great way to end this year’s festival.

Swansea International Jazz Festival is a great opportunity to experience the best of jazz music. The festival is also a great way to explore the city of Swansea, which has a rich history and culture.

Here are some tips for making the most of the festival:

  • Book your tickets early, as the festival is usually very popular.
  • Plan your day in advance, so you don’t miss any of the great acts.
  • Take advantage of the free events. The Stroller Programme is a great way to see some of the best up-and-coming jazz musicians.
  • Explore the city of Swansea and enjoy all that it has to offer. In the immediate area of the festival is Swansea Museum, currently staging the Twentieth Century Swansea exhibition.
