A visit to Swansea Bay is perfect for nature lovers eager to discover the fascinating wildlife that calls our coast, woodlands and rolling hills home.
Join TV wildlife expert Iolo Williams as he sets off on three inspiring journeys across our stunning coastline and lush woodlands, sharing the wonders of spring and the natural world along the way.
Nature and Wildlife in Swansea and Mumbles
Iolo begins in Singleton Park, where 250 acres of open grassland and mature trees create the perfect stage for songbirds to fill the air with their calls.
He then heads to Bracelet Bay, exploring the rockpools and inviting us to uncover the shoreline’s hidden treasures - from crabs and seaweed to pretty shells, and perhaps even a ‘Mermaid’s Purse’ (an egg case from a member of the shark family!).
Nature and Wildlife in Rural Swansea
In Rural Swansea, Iolo visits both Lliw Reservoir and Penllergare Valley Woods. At the reservoir, you might spot Red Kites, Green Woodpeckers and, with a bit of luck, even an otter!
Over in Penllergare Valley Woods, he follows peaceful woodland trails to discover the wildlife living among the wetlands, lakes, rivers and forests. Keep your eyes peeled for Moorhens, Grey Wagtails and Kingfishers!
Nature and Wildlife on Gower
For his final spring stop, Iolo heads to Gower to explore Oxwich Bay and Cefn Bryn. At Oxwich’s bird hide, you may catch sight of Moorhens, Mallards, Coots, Swans and even the occasional otter.
Cefn Bryn is also a paradise for bird watchers and home to the iconic Arthur’s Stone (a Neolithic burial chamber steeped in legend). Keep an eye on the ponds for frogspawn and newts - and you might even spot a speedy Common Lizard darting around!
Where to Eat
After all that outdoor action, take a moment to unwind with a warming hot chocolate or a delicious homemade meal at one of our cosy rural pubs with crackling log fires, or at a coastal restaurant offering beautiful sea views.
Where to stay
