Nature and Wildlife in Swansea Bay

Blackpill

Blackpill (SA3 5AS) is the stretch of beach between Swansea and Mumbles and is a respected bird watching location. It was made a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) in 1986 in recognition of its importance for local and migratory birds during their migration stop over. During the winter months you can spot Sanderling, ringed plovers and oystercatchers. The mud flats provide a rich source of food for marine invertebrates.

Clyne Valley Country Park

Swansea’s only country park (SA2 8EW) consists of 700 acres of open and wooded hillsides, steep gorges and quarries to meadowland and wet valley floor. Nature has taken over the industrial origins of the park and you’ll find birds such as wrens and nuthatches alongside nightjars and blackcaps. Listen out for woodpeckers. The area is also home to badgers and foxes and the Clyne river weaves its way throughout.
