The ‘Tales from the Vaults 2’ drop-in event will be on 17-18th November in the Discovery Room in Central Library and showcase hidden treasures from the special collections of Swansea Libraries.
The event will draw customers into the world of libraries, bringing out rarely seen items and some of our favourite things from our storage vaults. ‘ Swansea: a place in time’ will take visitors on a timeline through our special collections, focussing on specific items from our collection to tell the story of historic events. We start in the medieval period with the Swansea Charter then move through the story of the Illston Pilgrims to 18th Century Swansea and the ‘Brighton of Wales’ before taking in mid Victorian Swansea, WW1, Dylan Thomas, Badfinger and Dr Who to name but a few.
Our special collections are not just made up of books; historic maps, library artefacts and sculptures will help tell the story too– something for everyone. There will be a chance to learn about this history of these items, the history of our library service and special collections plus the library future collecting work that identifies and preserves our current times for future generations.
This is for everyone. Customers are encouraged to pick up and look through items. Kids absolutely welcome. We will have VR and a kids trail plus a themed activity downstairs in the children’s library.
